Markham
ended the regular season by traveling to the home of
Canada
’s #1 rated team, the Aurora Tigers. Battling
hard for 60 minutes, the Waxers, stayed close with
the Tigers but in the end fell by a 6-4 score.
Again, Greg van’t
Hof
performed well in the Waxers net, making 33 saves
in the losing cause.
Aurora
took a 2-0 lead after the first period before
Markham
would get on the scoreboard. Ben
Cottreau made it 2-1 when he converted on the powerplay
early in the second period for his team leading 43rd goal of the
season.
Aurora
stretched their lead to 4-1 before the Waxers would
close the second period with a flourish, scoring twice in the last
1:32
of the period, on two Ryan Olidis
goals, to make it 4-3 entering the final period.
Aurora
made it 5-3 early in the third before a Steve
Ritchie goal made it 5-4. A
Cottreau assist on Ritchie’s goal gave him 95
points on the season (in 43 games played), which at this point appears to give Cottreau
the unofficial OPJAHL League Scoring Title.
Aurora
would salt away the victory with a just past the midway point of the third to
round out the regular season.
