The two week layoff over Christmas seemed to be a factor in the Waxers second game back after New Year's as the rust certainly clogged up what had been a well oiled machine in December. The Waxers just couldn't get anything going against a hard working Ajax team and lost their first game in a month, 7-4, snapping a 5 game winning streak.

It looked okay for Markham early as Daniel Torres opened the scoring 2:05 in to the game, rifling home a hard wrist shot along the ice to the far side after being sent wide through the neutral zone by a Chris Korte breakout pass. That was the last time Markham would have a lead as Ajax tied the game 1-1 before the end of the first and took a 3-1 lead midway through the second period.

Markham cut in to the lead when Ben Cottreau took the puck in his own end, carried it right up the ice and around the net before finding Ryan Olidis in the slot for a 4-on-3 powerplay goal (Riley Hill picked up the second assist). Ajax would extend their lead to 4-2 before the period ended.

The Axemen would open the scoring in the third period before the Waxers made one last surge to make it 5-4 midway through the third period. Hill scored twice in just 1:06, the first a powerplay tip in assisted by Korte and Steve Ritchie, and the second stuffing home a rebound after Andrew Dias and Josh Jacobs had the initial shots. Ajax salted away the game with two goals in the final 8 minutes of the game.
