Markham Waxers Game Report

JAN. 19/2003 (Game 44) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
NORTH YORK RANGERS 1 2 1 - 4
MARKHAM WAXERS 1 3 1 - 5

The Waxers were able to gut out a much needed 5-4 victory in the second game of a home-and-home weekend series with the hard working North York Rangers and earned a complete sweep of the games played in the Rangers' home rink. Not a textbook performance but the Waxers played with emotion and did what first place hockey clubs need to do, find a way to win.

The Rangers got on the board first just over two minutes in to the game when a Ranger shot handcuffed goalie Scott Gray and trickled over the line.  The Waxers were able to tie the game at 1-1 after the first on a similar goal of their own with 3:29 left in the period.  Ben Cottreau won the face off in the Ranger end back to Albert Ferrante and he threw a shot at the net that had eyes and went through the myriad of legs in front of the Ranger goalie and hit the back of the net for his third of the year.

The second period was dominated, territorially, by the Waxers although North York did take two leads during the middle frame.  They scored to make it 2-1 just 1:26 in to the period but Markham struck back midway through on a power play.  Mark Menonte and Tony Rossi ran a give and go on the half wall and then Menonte found Kevin Cribari sneaking in from the point.  Cribari's hard wrister from the high slot beat the goalie clean to the blocker side to tie the game.  North York took a 3-2 lead scoring with just under four minutes left in the period for what would turn out to be their final lead of the weekend.  With 2:04 left on the clock, Markham tied the game on Rossi's first of the afternoon.  Pat Porretta fed Joe Rothwell at the point and his low shot was redirected by a sprawling Ranger right to Rossi who had the empty net staring him in the face and he slid home his 15th of the season.  Then, with just 0:26 left on the clock, Andrew Dias bagged his first goal as a Waxer picking up a rebound and stuffing it home after Cribari had won the draw back to Jamie Wright and his shot was stopped by the Ranger goalie.

The 4-3 lead held for the majority of the third period until North York scored a power play marker with 5:46 left on the clock.  The Rangers were a little too excited on scoring the goal and took a penalty during their celebration which opened the door for the Waxers. On the ensuing power play, Menonte started the break out giving the puck to Cribari and he found Rossi at the far blue line.  Stepping across the line, Rossi slowed the play down and then stepped off the wall on his off wing and let a wicked slapper go high glove side in to the upper corner for the game winning goal.
