For the first time in Waxers history, they defeated cross town
rival Thornhill in a playoff series as Markham swept the Rattlers after a 5-1
victory in game 4 of the opening round playoff series. Certainly no where
near the level of intensity of the first three games, the game was extremely
dull and seemed like the outcome had been predetermined.
Markham jumped on the board first, scoring just 2:42 in to the
game on a power play as Kevin Cribari
scored the first of what would be his
first ever Junior A hat trick. As the Waxers moved the puck around the
zone with the man advantage, Liam Bowen fed the puck to
Mark Menonte down below
the goal line. Menonte moved from one side of the net to the other and
then found Cribari all alone in the middle of the box. Cribari buried the
wrist shot and the Waxers never relinquished the lead. Markham made it
2-0 just under 5 minutes later with another power play goal. Jamie Wright
and Bowen combined this time to set up Pat Porretta on the half boards and he
fired a low wrist shot that beat the Thornhill goalie to the short side for his
2nd of the playoffs. Markham held a decided advantage in play as they out
shot the Rattlers 17-4 in this period.
Thornhill was able to score the first goal of the second, a
power play goal with 8:09 left in the middle frame, but all that did was wake
the Waxers up. It was all Markham from there on in and the Waxers
regained their 2 goal lead on Cribari's second of the evening. While on a
power play in the final minute of the period, Tony Rossi and Menonte moved the
puck back and forth before they fed Cribari at the point. Cribari
hesitated just slightly and then ripped a solid slap shot high over the Rattler
goalie to make it 3-1.
The third period started the way the first did as the Waxers
scored two goals in opening 4 minutes to salt away the victory. The
prettiest goal of the night resulted in Cribari getting his hat trick as he
finished off a pretty tic-tac-toe 3-on-2 rush. After dropping the puck to
Bowen, Cribari headed to the net as Bowen fed Ryan Steane and then Steane found
Cribari back door for the tap in. Then, the same line completed the
scoring off a faceoff when a Mike Diamond shot was stopped and Cribari poked
the puck to Bowen for a one-timer goal.
Scott Gray played well in net and made 21 saves on the way to
his third victory of the postseason. Markham now awaits the results of
the other playoff series and will play either St Michael's (who have already
advanced after sweeping Pickering) or Port Hope (if they rally to defeat
Wexford who lead the series 2-1 at the time of this recap).
