WAXERS WIN
FIRST TWO REGULAR SEASON CONTESTS The Waxers began the regular season by routing the Wexford Raiders 6-2 at Centennial Arena on Friday. On Sunday, the Waxers lambasted the Trenton Sting 7-1 in Mississauga during the league's annual College Day Weekend festivities. "We were definitely happy with the way things went," Herrington said. "Any time you can win your home games and college weekend with the young guys that we have who are looking to catch the eyes of the scouts...we were nervous, but we turned things around. It's a fantastic way to start. You couldn't ask for anything better." Nerves certainly played a part in Friday's opener as the Waxers trailed 2-0 before Greg Chambers cut their deficit just before the first period came to a close. That goal fuelled some momentum as Chambers and Ben Buxton scored powerplay goals just 23 seconds apart in the second period to give the Waxers the lead for good at 3-2. James Regan and Mike Carlesimo, on a short-handed effort, padded the Waxers lead to 5-2. The Raiders had a golden opportunity to get back into the game as the Waxers were forced to play shorthanded after receiving consecutive five-minute majors. But the Waxers' penalty killing units and strong netminding by B.J. Forsyth, who saw close to 50 shots during the game, held the Raiders at bay. Kevin Tompkins potted the lone goal of the third period. Herrington acknowledged his club's ability to kill off the majors and Forsyth's work between the pipes was the game's turning point. "They didn't let the adversity get to them," Herrington said of the shorthanded situation his club faced. "And B.J. (Forsyth) made the saves when we need them. That picked the guys up." The Waxers experienced a sense of deja vu in Sunday's contest. Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Waxers got unanswered goals within a 16-second span from Chris Petracco, on a power play, and Rob Mazzuca off a deflection, to take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The Waxers opened the floodgates in the third period as Jimmy Ball, on a power play, Tompkins and Chambers scored within a span of 73 seconds to give Markham a comfortable 5-1 advantage. Four minutes later, the Waxers added some additional insurance when Donald Johnson and Tompkins, with his second of the game, scored within a 54-second span. Forsyth and Chris DelRosario split time in goal for the Waxers. What impressed Herrington about the club's effort on Sunday was its ability to almost score at will. "We certainly seem to have a team that can score in bunches. That's a good thing to have because it tells me that the guys have a sense of when a team is on the ropes." "So far in the two games the guys might be developing a killer instinct."
