HERRINGTON
UNHAPPY WITH WAXERS INCONSISTENT EFFORT That's what Head Coach Russ Herrington said after his club came away with a win and loss in its last two outings. On Friday, the Vaughan Vipers came into Centennial Arena and handed the Waxers a 6-3 loss. With two days to mull over their subpar effort, the Waxers returned to Centennial Arena on Sunday and doubled the count on the visiting Parry Sound Shamrocks 8-4. "We're too good a club to be up and down," said Herrington in summing up the two outings. "It was another one of those retribution games after Friday. But it's an old story for us. If we have to rebound after a disappointing loss we'll only be a .500 club. That's not acceptable." Herrington feels part of the problem stems from the club's relative inexperience. "We knew going in that we might have this problem (inconsistency). But it's something we won't as a coaching staff allow to continue." "If we want to challenge for first in our division we've got to correct that problem now." In Sunday's win, the Waxers blitzed the Shamrocks with five goals in the first period to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Waxers padded their lead to 7-0 in the early going of the second period and held a comfortable 8-2 advantage after 40 minutes. The Shamrocks capitalized on a pair of two-man advantages to score twice in the final stanza to round out the scoring. While Herrington was glad to come away with the two points, he is not totally satisfied with the effort his youthful charges put forth. "I was happy for the first half of the game. But then the guys went to sleep. I'm looking for us to play a full 60 minutes." Lawne Snyder and Chris Petracco each scored twice for the Waxers. Jason Young, Donald Johnson, Mark Mitchell, a call-up from the Waxers' midget affiliate and James Regan, on a shorthanded effort, rounded out the scoring. In Friday's loss, the Waxers got off to a slow start and trailed 4-2 after 20 minutes.
The visiting Vipers scored the lone goal of the second period before Kevin Tompkins scored his second goal of the game on a powerplay effort just 30 seconds into the start of the third period to cut the Waxers deficit to 5-3. But that would be as close as they would get as the Vipers added another goal before the game concluded. Petracco accounted for the Waxers first goal. Entering the contest, Herrington knew the Vipers would be a team to be reckoned with. However, he suspected his players were not on the same wavelength. "I think that they (Vaughan) surprised the guys. They didn't surprise me. It's something they have to deal with amongst themselves to stay focused and prepared. Vaughan made us look silly."
