WILL THE
REAL WAXERS STAND UP? What's been a common occurrence this season is for his club to display a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality. That, play well one night and follow that outing with a stinker, or vice versa. The Waxers did just that on Friday with an embarrassing 8-3 loss to the visiting first-year St. Michael's Buzzers. The following night though, the Waxers took on a different look and edged the host Ajax Axemen 3-2. "I was disappointed with how we played on Friday and I feel we owed the fans a better effort," said Herrington. "But on Saturday we played the way we know we can. The effort and execution were there." "As far as redemption goes, you'll be .500 all the time. We've had too many of those types of weekends. It would be nice to string some wins together." In Friday's outing the Waxers trailed 1-0 before tying the game on a shorthanded goal from Kevin Tompkins. But the Buzzers jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two periods and were never threatened after that. Rob Mazzuca scored a second period powerplay goal and Jimmy Ball added the third goal in the final period with the Waxers already down 7-2.
On Saturday, the Waxers took a 1-0 first period lead on a powerplay goal by Greg Chambers and added another extra strength marker by David Colucci to go up 2-0 through 40 minutes. Colucci then made it 3-0 early in the third before the Axemen made the game interesting with two goals before time ran out. "We played our style and we dictated the play most of the night," Herrington said of Saturday's effort. The Waxers host the Pickering Panthers Friday at 8:00pm and then play the Wexford Raiders on the road Sunday. On a separate note the Waxers made another move late last week by sending the rights to winger/defenceman Ryan Bayliss, who has not been with the club all year, to the Aurora Tigers for centre Tom Kotsopoulos, 20. Herrington is happy to have Kotsopoulos join the club and bolster the centre position.
