WAXERS BOSS
READS THE RIOT ACT The Markham Waxers owner has let off some steam recently after his Provincial Junior A Hockey League entry has just won three of nine games this month and sport an 11-11-1-2 mark (prior to play on November 30, 1999). Not the record first place clubs are made of. Included in these outings was a 5-2 win over the Pickering Panthers at Centennial Arena on Friday and a 4-3 loss to the host Wexford Raiders on Sunday. Refusing to single out individuals Bremner feels certain players have not played to their full potential. "Our expectations were a lot higher for this team," Bremner said. "We want kids that will put in the effort every game." While work commitments have kept Bremner away from the arena for most of the games this season, the ones he did watch first hand were intolerable to his liking. Bremner insists he's fully behind the actions taken by club management and the coaching staff. "But everyone can improve their attitude and get their work ethic straightened out. The order has been given," he said. Bremner has already made one dressing room appearance to address the players. Should the club continue to regress through December, Bremner vowed changes will be made. "Some of the players who go home for Christmas might not be coming back," he hinted. "The guys had better wake up. There's been a couple of displays on the ice for a lack of respect for ownership, the management and coaches." In Friday's win, Tom Kotsopoulos made an auspicious debut for the Waxers after coming over in a trade from the Aurora Tigers by scoring two goals, including one powerplay marker. Greg Chambers also netted two, including a powerplay goal and Joel Kitchen, one for the Waxers, who led 1-0 after one period and 4-1 after two. On Sunday, the Waxers held a 1-0 first period lead before the Raiders scored three quick goals in the second frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Waxers got one back before the period concluded, but could get no closer.
David Colucci, on a powerplay, Kevin Tompkins and Chambers each scored once for the Waxers, who are tied for fourth place in the Southern Division with the Ajax Axemen. The Axemen, however, have two games in hand on the Waxers. Despite the split, Waxers Head Coach Russ Herrington feels his charges gave a good effort on both nights. "I thought we deserved to win on Sunday. We just didn't get many breaks go our way. We had to work for our goals and they got a couple of lucky bounces." "Right now the kids are working hard. We just never seem to get a bounce going our way. It's frustrating."
