WAXERS' ROOKIES BLENDING IN WELL
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
Upon entering his first training camp as head coach of the Markham Waxers Junior A Hockey Club, Russ Herrington was concerned if members of last year's Markham team could play in harmony with those who came over from the Thornhill Rattlers.

After all, the two clubs were not exactly the best of friends over the last two seasons when they faced off against each other.

But as training camp has progressed, any bad blood that existed is now water under the bridge, noted Herrington.

And judging by the way things are going, Herrington feels this year's team will not embarass itself on the ice as they prepared for this weekend's first taste of preseason action against the Aurora Tigers.

"They've all bought into the Waxers' thing now and they all like the fact that they're Waxers now," said Herrington, of those who joined the Markham entry.

SEVEN FORMER RATTLERS
Of the group exchanging their former Rattlers apparel for the Waxers' blue and white are three defencemen and four forwards. Bolstering the blue line are Markham native Chris Bahen, Lawne Snyder and Mike Clarke. The forward lines will be reinforced by the additions of Matt Selby, son of former Toronto Maple Leafs player Britt Selby and the Rattlers Most Improved Player last season, Unionville native Brett Barrer, Ian Malcolm and Rob Mazzuca.

"We like the core of guys that we got from Thornhill," said Herrington.

In combining the players from two teams, Herrington cited the players have no more than one year of playing experience at the tier two Junior A level. That might not be construed as positive news.

But Herrington feels the air of optimism prevalent at camp will overcome any deficiencies.

"The guys we got are players who are on the way up and are looking to make a dent in the league. There's experience on the team. But it's not vast," he conceded. "But they should still be enthusiastic."

ROOKIES IMPRESSIVE
While the combined Waxers-Rattlers contingent are expected to carry the team, Herrington is quick to point out there's a good cast of rookies vying for the remaining open positions.

Among those are defencemen Jimmy Ball, Alex Stoyan and Jim Ulcar. Joel Kitchen and Daniel Sisca have been impressive at the centre positions. Auditioning for a spot on the wings are Robert Burrows and Jim Stamatopoulos. Tom Lawson is battling incumbant Kevin Cordiner for the first-string goalkeepers position.
