WAXERS SKATE OFF WITH A
SPIRITED WIN The Waxers displayed those tendencies for two periods when they faced the Spirit of Stouffville in a Provincial Junior A Hockey League contest at the Stouffville rec centre on Thursday. That proved to be good enough for the Waxers as they skated away with a 6-3 win. Unanswered goals by Jim Ulcar and two power-play goals by Mike Clarke and Matt Selby staked the Waxers to a 3-0 first period lead. The Spirit replied with a goal late in the first and another in the second to cut the Waxers lead to 3-2 after 40 minutes.
But in the third period, back-to-back goals by Brett Barrer and a shorthanded effort by Lawne Snyder gave the Waxers a 6-2 advantage. The Spirit scored a power-play goal late in the game to round out the scoring. "When we're skating and moving the puck then we usually have more success," said Waxers head coach Russ Herrington. "We played really well in the first and third period and kind of sleep walked through the second. We went away from what worked for us in the first period," he cited. The win by the Waxers enabled them to remain tied with the Collingwood Blues for third place in the Central Conference with an 11-4-1-1 mark. The Waxers will be in North York tonight for a game against the Rangers at 7pm.
