GOLDENBERG IS BACK WITH
WAXERS, BAHEN LEAVES CLUB
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports
Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
The Markham Waxers' offence received some bolstering last week. But at the same time, the
Waxers' defence received a setback of sorts. The good news for the Waxers came with the
return of a familiar face in Jason Goldenberg.
The 18-year-old right winger played the entire 1996-97 campaign with the Waxers and
started last season with the local club before he was summoned by Windsor Compuware of the
Ontario Hockey League in late December.
A Markham native, Goldenberg signed with the Waxers on Friday.
Waxers' head coach Russ Herrington
revealed he will employ Goldenberg on a line with Bryan Lachapelle and Rob Mazzuca. As well, he will
be used on the club's powerplay.
"We could really use a gifted goal scorer and he fits that role. He adds depth and
experience and he's coming back with the right attitude," said Herrington.
While Goldenberg's return will be a plus for the offence, a void was left on the roster
when defenceman Chris Bahen quit the team.
Herrington noted the 17-year-old Bahen demanded a trade after playing four games with the
Waxers this season and tallied a goal and three assists.
Last season, Bahen toiled with the Thornhill Rattlers and was a participant in the Metro
Junior A Hockey League all-star game.

This past summer, Bahen was drafted by the Brampton Batallion in the 24th
round of the OHL draft, but elected to join the Waxers in the hope of getting a college
hockey scholarship.
Herrington conceded Bahen was a vital cog on the Waxers' blue line.
"He was our best defenceman and we were told by some U.S. schools that he's the best
defenceman in the league."
As to why Bahen elected to leave the team, Herrington was initially shocked and remains at
a loss.
"I don't understand it. I don't know what led to this but it's unfortunate."
Accentuating the positive, Herrington noted the remaining group of defencemen have picked
up the slack fairly well since Bahen left the club.
"So far each of them have responded and we're happy with that. I believe in the long
run it'll be a good thing for Markham."
