WAXERS TAME WILDCATS FOR
SECOND STRAIGHT WIN
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports
Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
The Markham waxers played a game on Friday in which they dominated play against the
visiting Huntsville Wildcats.
However, there was a matter of putting enough pucks past the hot goaltending tandem of
Ryan Venturelli and Dan Leclair to earn a win.
For two periods, the Waxers appeared to be stymied by the two goaltenders.
But a late third-period surge, which saw the Waxers pot three unanswered goals, enabled
them to skate away with a 7-3 Provincial Junior A Hockey League win.
"We said that if we could score on goal the floodgates will open and it kind of did
in the third," said Waxers' head coach Russ
Herrington, whose charges fired 47 shots on the Wildcats goal while
surrendering just 16.
The Waxers took a 1-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes when rookie defenceman Jimmy Ball scored a goal with
just seven seconds left in the period.
After both clubs exchanged two goals apiece in the second period, the Waxers took a 4-2
lead just 11 seconds into the final stanza on a power-play goal by Brett Barrer.
After the Wildcats responded with a goal just over a minute later to narrow the Markham
lead to 4-3, the floodgates finally opened for the Waxers as they lit the lamp for three
unanswered goals to put the game on the ice.
Bryan Lachapelle,
Barrer, with a short-handed tally, and Daniel
Sisca, on a power-play effort, did the damage.

Barrer and Locky
Gelinas accounted for the Waxers' second period markers.
Occupants of a two-game winning streak, the Waxers improved its record to 5-3-1 and
currently hold down third place in the Central Conference standing.
Although the regular season is still young, Herrington felt the on-ice effort put forth by
his club on Friday was the best he's seen to date.
"This was as close we've come to playing a full 60 minutes this year," observed
Herrington. "We looked like the Markham Waxers team that we expected to see," he
added. "The guys worked hard and moved the puck well and they played good defence.
The guys were in it from the start."
