HUSKIES TAKE A BIG BITE
OUT OF WAXERS' WEEKEND The Waxers began its Provincial Junior A Hockey League weekend action by extracting a measure of revenge on the Thornhill Rattlers with a hard-fought 4-2 win at Centennial Arena on Friday. In two prior meetings this season, the Rattlers had defeated the Waxers. Travelling to Durham the following night to face a team that had won just two games all season, the Waxers were ambushed by the Huskies 6-3. Needless to say, Waxers' Head Coach Russ Herrington was a little perturbed at the effort his charges put in that night and spoiled what could have been a productive weekend. "Saturday's effort certainly put a damper on our weekend," he conceded. "We worked hard to get a point from Collingwood (last Monday) and I thought we outplayed Thornhill for most of the game. Then we got to Durham and the guys weren't ready to play." In explaining the loss, Herrington felt his club entered the game with a feeling of overconfidence. "I think the guys took this game for granted even though they were warned." "The game is not played on paper and that's what happened on Saturday. They probably look at their record and decided that Durham had just two wins, both against Huntsville and they thought it was a matter of lacing up the skates and showing up on the ice. But that's not the case." What's lacking, Herrington pointed out, is the absence of some on-ice leadership. "There's nobody who is stepping up as a major leader of the team. If we can get someone to do that, these nights wouldn't happen." Jim Stamatopoulos staked the Waxers to a 1-0 lead in the first period before the Huskies evened the count after 20 minutes. The Waxers regained the lead in the second period on Stamatopoulos' second goal of the game. But from there it was all downhill for the Waxers as the Huskies registered four unanswered goals, including three extra-strength markers, before the period concluded to take a 5-2 lead. The Huskies scored the first goal of the third period before Ian Malcolm rounded out the scoring. Not helping matters for the Waxers were three goals which were disallowed, including two in the first period and one early in the second. "(Those goals) would have put us up 4-1 early in the second. Instead the game was tied 1-1," noted Herrington.
Not wishing to make excuses, Herrington conceded his club did not put the effort in like they did in their last two outings. FORSYTH SAVES THE DAY FOR
WAXERS' WIN OVER RATTLERS The Waxers took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes on goals by David Sisca and David Colucci, on a shorthanded effort. Both clubs exchanged second period goals with Locky Gelinas accounting for the Waxers' tally. In the final period, Chris Petracco delivered an empty net power-play goal with 13 seconds left in regulation time to ice the win.
