HERRINGTON HAPPY WITH NEW
FACES Seeking to bolster their forward lines, the Waxers waited patiently to make the right deal. And late last week, the Provincial Junior A hockey club made a couple of transactions which might enable them to narrowly the gap with the top clubs in the Central Conference. In one move, the Waxers dealt forward Matt Selby to the North York Rangers for right winger Mike Hutchison. The Waxers immediately sent Hutchison to the Mississauga Chargers in exchange for right winger David Colucci. In 23 games with the Chargers, the 19-year-old Colucci was the club's leading scorer with five goals and 15 assists. Not standing pat with that move, the Waxers also acquired right winger Rob Bumbaco from the Huntsville Wildcats for cash. The 19-year-old Bumbaco amassed six goals and nine assists in 17 games with the Wildcats after starting the season with the Niagara Scenic.
Colucci and Bumbaco made their Waxers' debut last Friday and paid immediate dividends in the club's 8-4 home win over the Spirit of Stouffville. Playing on a line with Ian Malcolm and Brett Barrer, Bumbaco scored twice and had an assist. Colucci joined a line with Daniel Sisca and Rob Mazzuca and recorded one helper. Waxers' Head Coach Russ Herrington was pleased with the two newcomers and noted the deals were not done on the spur of the moment. "These deals took a while to get done. We had our sights set on these two guys and we chased them for the last two weeks," he said. The Waxers' bench boss feels the two players add more depth to their forward lines and provide needed experience. "Both are extremely quick and good with the puck and reliable defensively," Herrington added. The Waxers also made two separate cash deals, sending goalie Kevin Cordiner to the Aurora Tigers and forward Jason Goldenberg to the Caledon Canadiens.
