WAXERS'
CHALLENGE IS TO WIN GAME FOUR . . . ONE SHIFT AT A TIME
When the Wellington Dukes bus their way to Centennial Arena tomorrow to
face the Markham Waxers in the fourth game of their best-of-seven
Provincial Junior A Hockey League semi-final series, chances are they
might be bringing the brooms with them.
The Waxers, however, hope they won't be put to use when the puck is
dropped at 8 p.m.
But the reality of the situation is that the Waxers find themselves on the
brink of elimination after they lost the third game of the series Tuesday
in Wellington an 8-2 defeat and trail the series three games to none.
The Dukes held leads of 2-1 after one period and 5-2 through two.
Aaron Buckstein
scored both goals for the Waxers on the power play.
Despite what the final score indicated, Waxers head coach Russ Herrington
felt his club was competitive for just over half of the contest.
The difference, he felt stemmed from his club's inability to put the puck
in the net and some soft goaltending on their part.
"I thought for about the first 35 minutes we were evenly matched and we
easily could have had the lead. But we didn't get any bounces and they got
a couple of soft goals. We also had two turnovers in the neutral zone that
they scored on 39 seconds apart that made a 3-2 game into a 5-2 game and
in the third period we were pressing," cited Herrington.

If the Waxers hope to stave off elimination, Herrington
feels his club must get some breaks and get off to a good start.
"I'd like to see if we could get the first goal of the game. But at this
point it's tough. We're used to being the team that works the hardest, but
it's not the case right now."
Not helping for the matters for the Waxers, Herrington hinted, are some
bumps and bruises that some of his key performers have incurred.
"If this was the regular season I wouldn't be dressing some of the guys."
Hopefully with a couple of days off we will show up with enough pride. And
if we can win one game, who knows? Maybe the floodgates will open." If a
fifth game is required, it would be played in Wellington on Sunday at 2
p.m.
