Losing games is never a fun experience. But when the
Markham Waxers absorbed an 8-1 drubbing at the hands of the host Vaughan
Vipers in last Saturday's Provincial Junior A Hockey League contest, they
absorbed a valuable lesson.
When the Waxers take care of business in their own end of the rink, good
things happen. Taking that lesson to heart less than 24 hours later
produced a 3-2 road win for the Waxers against the North York Rangers.
Combined with a 6-3 home ice victory over the Ajax Axemen on Friday, the
Waxers remain atop the south division standings with a 22-7-5-1 mark
entering tonight's (Thursday's) road game against the north division's
Stouffville Spirit at 7:30.
"The commitment to playing good defence has been a big part of our
success," explained Waxers head coach
Russ Herrington.
"Based on the way we played in our own end of the rink (on Sunday) I think
the lesson we tried to teach got through to them."
Surrendering two power-play goals in the first four minutes of the game,
the Waxers rallied to tie the game after two periods on goals by
Kevin Cribari and
Ryan Olidis, on a power
play in just his second game back after recovering from a facial injury
early last month. Tony Rossi
scored the game-winning goal with just five minutes left in regulation
time.
In Saturdayıs game, Pat
Porretta scored the lone goal for the the Waxers, who trailed 4-0
after one period and 7-0 through two. While Herrington said a loss of that
magnitude was a humbling experience, he cited the close race for first
place in their division against the likes of the Wexford Raiders and St.
Michaelıs Buzzers leaves little margin for error.

"In a 49-game schedule you're due for a stinker or two.
Good teams might have a stinker, but not two or three in a row. Hopefully
thatıs what happened with us."
In Friday's outing against the Axemen, the Waxers led 2-0 after one period
and 4-3 through two. Waxers' captain
Mark Menonte and
Porretta each had doubles while singles went to
Jeff Weiss and Rossi, on a
shorthanded effort. Kevin Sit
replaced Anthony
Guadagnolo in goal after the Axemen tied the score at 3-3 in the
second period and delivered a shutout relief effort.
Tomorrow (Friday), the Waxers host the Huntsville Wildcats at 8 p.m. and
then go to Oshawa on Sunday for a game against the Legionaires at 6:30
p.m.
