..FROM
THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
DECEMBER 18, 2001
It wasn¹t pretty by any stretch of the imagination.
But the Markham Waxers will gladly accept a pair of victories last weekend
in Provincial Junior A Hockey League action to extend their unbeaten
streak
to four games.
Playing host to the North York Rangers on Friday, the Waxers skated off
with
a 4-1 win.
Taking to the road Sunday, the Waxers faced the Pickering Panthers
and
emerged with a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win.
³We played average, good enough to win, but not our best hockey,² cited
Waxers¹ head coach Russ Herrington of his club¹s weekend performance.
³Friday was a bad game all around, it was sloppy. Sunday¹s game was
sluggish. We did what we had to do.²
Herrington felt the difference in the two outings was his club¹s ability
to
do the little things well. Among them, he revealed, were in capitalizing
on
their scoring opportunities when they needed to. On the defensive side,
Herrington said the defencemen did a good job of blocking shots and the
goaltending tandem of Chris Lawrence and Kevin Sit, have alleviated any
worries that were evident early in the season.
³We had a fair number of scoring chances and we did a good job of
controlling the puck. Our puck possession is usually fairly good and our
goalies (Sit on Friday and Lawrence on Sunday) made the saves when they
had
to.²
In Friday¹s win over the Rangers, Kevin Cribari had a pair of goals for
the
Waxers, who led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 through two. Mark Menonte and
Jesse Boucher, on an empty netter, bulged the twine once each.
On Sunday, an overtime goal by Boucher, his second of the game, proved to
be
the difference. Travis O¹Rourke scored the Waxers¹ other goal.
The two victories improved the Waxers¹ south division record to 18-13-4-1
where they are firmly entrenched in third place, 11 points ahead of the
fourth-place Thornhill Rattlers and 11 behind the second-place St.
Michael¹s
Buzzers.
The Waxers resume league play Thursday when they travel to Newmarket to
play
the Hurricanes, who are in first place in the league¹s north division. On
Friday, the Waxers host the Stouffville Spirit at 8 p.m. at Centennial
Arena..
