StreetTalk with Mike Hayakawa

..FROM THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
WAXERS WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT
Looking at it from the outside, an 8-3 win by the Markham Waxers over the visiting Huntsville Wildcats on Monday had the makings of a one-sided Provincial Junior A Hockey League game.

While Waxers head coach Russ Herrington was happy to see his club win its seventh straight and remain atop the southern division standings, deep inside, he thought his charges did not bring one of their more consistent efforts to Centennial Arena.

"Dan made some good saves and bailed us out."
Russ Herrington

"We would play well for five or six minutes and dominate Huntsville, then go three or four minutes and lay back and not do anything. Then we'd pick it up again and then slack off once more," he observed.

The possibility Markham was dwelling on its weekend victories over the Vaughan Vipers and Wexford Raiders or was looking ahead to tomorrow's game against the Pickering Panthers, a team that handed Markham its lone loss of the season to date, could have been on the players minds, Herrington speculated. "Mentally we didn't come as sharp as we have been in the past few games. We did enough in fits and spurts to deserve the win. But we didn't give it a full 60 minutes."

Paul Robinson scored twice, including a powerplay marker, to propel the Waxers, who led 2-1 after 20 minutes and 6-2 through two periods. Steve Kelly, Jimmy Ball, Kevin Tompkins (on a power play), Mark Menonte and Jason Fracarro added singles.

If there was a bright spot, Herrington through it was the work of goalie Dan Leclair, who kept the Waxers in contention during the early going when the score was close. "Dan made some good saves and bailed us out," said Herrington.

Now 7-1 on the season, the Waxers play host to the Pickering Panthers 8 p.m. Friday at Centennial Arena then go to St. Michael's on Sunday for a 7 p.m. game.
