A quick start after a 13 day layoff proved to be
just what the Waxers needed as they scored twice on their first 3 shots en
route to a 5-3 victory over visiting Vaughan. The win was a season high
5th straight, including their 3rd straight on home ice.
It took just 22 seconds in the New Year for
leading scorer Ben Cottreau to
pick up where he left off as he bagged his 30th of the year, stuffing home a
rebound off a Ryan Olidis shot
(Jeff Paisley earned the
second assist). Then, just over 2 minutes later, Riley
Hill head manned the puck out of the Markham zone to Josh
Jacobs and he fed a sweet centering pass to Steve
Ritchie who ripped home his first of two on the night and first in a Waxer
uniform. Vaughan would score to make it 2-1 but Markham restored the 2
goal cushion thanks to Jacobs' unassisted shorthanded marker midway through the
period. Vaughan would close the gap to 3-2 after 20 minutes and tie the
game 3-3 with 5 minutes left in the second.
The Waxers would score the eventual game winning
goal 6:20 in to the third period, capitalizing on a powerplay
opportunity. Some nice puck movement from Darryl
Flowers to Jacobs started the play and after Jacobs centered it to Ritchie,
he drove it between the goalies' legs for the 4-3 lead. Flowers would
then add an insurance marker, jumping down deep in to the Vaughan zone to
finish off a play started by Jacobs and Cottreau.

van't Hof earned his third straight victory stopping 28 shots to push his
record to 7-1-1-0 on the season.
