Opening the 2003 half of the season, the Waxers were coming off
a two week layoff as they hosted the Vaughan Vipers in their final match up of
the regular season. The Waxers looked rusty through the majority of the game,
especially without the puck, but a Pat Porretta hat trick propelled the team to
a 6-5 overtime victory.
The Vipers struck first to open a 1-0 lead on the Waxers and
newly acquired goalie Scott Gray who was making his first start in a Waxer
uniform. Markham would get the goal back on a power play at the 7:26 mark
on Porretta's first of the evening. After stopping a dump in, Gray left
the puck for Tony Rossi who then took it end-to-end firing a shot on net that
was stopped but Porretta was there to bang home the rebound. Markham
jumped ahead 2-1 just past the halfway point on another power play
marker. Kevin Cribari whistled a shot just wide which
Jamie Wright kept
in the zone on the left wing boards. He stepped in to the top of the
circle and roofed a slap shot for his 10th goal of the year. Vaughan would
again tie the game but the Waxers would take a 3-2 lead in to the
intermission. While killing a penalty, Liam Bowen and
Jason Duffy hounded
the Vipers defense creating a turnover at the Vaughan blueline that Duffy
grabbed a swooped in on net, beating the goalie on the glove side for his first
goal since returning to the lineup prior to Christmas.
The one goal lead evaporated quickly in the second as Vaughan
scored just over one minute in to the frame. The Waxers scored the next
two goals and looked like they might blow the game wide open. Ryan Olidis
scored the 4th goal of the game when Rossi sent an outlet pass from the
neutral zone to spring Olidis and Mark Menonte on a 2-on-1. Menonote slid
a soft saucer pass over to Olidis who roofed the puck over the diving
goaltender to bag his 9th of the season. Porretta then scored his second
of the night, at the 13:55 mark, when he redirected a centering pass from
Andrew Dias to make the score 5-3 Markham.
Vaughan cut in to the lead before the end of the second and
then tied the game with 5:49 left in regulation on a power play. That set
up the 4-on-4 overtime in which Porretta finished off his hat trick in exciting
fashion just 1:24 in to the 5 minute frame. After a Vaughan rush resulted
in a brutally wide shot, Duffy grabbed the puck on the wall in the Waxers zone
and fed Porretta for a clear cut breakaway from the Waxers blueline. Porretta
beat the goalie cleanly on the glove side to give the Waxers and Gray the
victory and 25 wins on the season.
