The Waxers defeated the Vaughan Vipers 3-2 at Vaughan
Monday night to cut their series deficit to 2-1. The contest featured the
return of Kevin
("Thumper") Tompkins who made a grand splash by scoring
the first goal of the contest. Jason
Fraccaro and Greg Chambers
supplied the other two markers. Tremendous team defence and outstanding
goaltending from Jeremy Wenzel
made for a prototypical playoff victory.
The Waxers started out quickly when captain Kevin
Tompkins dunked a centering pass from Joel
Kitchen to put the Waxers on the board first at the three minute mark, Jason
Young drew the second assist. The Vipers tied the score at the seven
minute mark but Markham would restore their lead when Jason
Fraccaro tipped home a pass from Paul
Robinson, on a Waxer powerplay, their only such opportunity of the
night to make it 2-1 late in the period. Greg Chambers
drew the other assist.
After playing a scoreless second period the Waxers added an insurance marker
when Fraccaro won a faceoff deep in Viper territory and fed a goalmouth pass to
Chambers who dunked in the third Waxer goal of the night. That goal would turn
out to be the eventual game winner as the Vipers scored their second and final
marker with just 20 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Waxers dominated the lanes this night and used their physical advantage
to slow the Vipers and forced Vaughan to play a Waxers style of game. In net
senior Jeremy Wenzel
was outstanding turning aside 30 of 32 shots he faced. Significantly for the
Waxers they played a tough, physical contest but stayed out of the penalty box.
With solid efforts from all fronts Markham now enjoys a brief respite before
they attempt to even the series. Game four doesn't go until Friday
(Mar. 3) at Markham.
