Markham jumped out to a 2-0 lead and eventually
defeated the North York Rangers 3-1 to take the decisive game seven in the
opening round of the playoffs. Greg
Chambers, Lawne Snyder
and Jason Young supplied the
offense as the Waxers pumped 48 shots at the Rangers goal in an
entertaining contest in front of a packed house at Markham Centennial. Jeremy
Wenzel turned aside 39 of the 40 shots he faced and came through
to lead the Waxers to a clutch victory.
The Waxers struck first when Greg
Chambers scored his fifth goal of the series from Jason
Fraccaro and Paul
Robinson at the five minute mark. Ten minutes later Rob
Mazzuca drew the puck back to Lawne Snyder
at the point, on a powerplay, and Snyder let go a rocket that no goaltender was
going to stop.
The Waxers dominated play in the early part of the second period although
the Rangers were able to muster up some scoring opportunities as well.
Nonetheless nobody was able to score and the game remained at 2-0 Markham after
forty minutes.
The third period saw the game continue to be a display of fine hockey with
some excellent offensive moves to create scoring opportunities, some
exceptional defensive plays, in particular Jimmy
Ball and Lawne Snyder
played outstanding games on the blueline. The remainder of the defensive corps
of Brent Pollock, Jim
Ulcar, Mike Carlesimo,
Mike Harding and Alex
Stoyan were all major contributors on the blueline in fine defensive
display by all this night.
With regulation time winding down the Rangers made the contest interesting
when they scored a powerplay goal to halve the lead at 2-1 with four and a half
minutes remaining when they finally were able to solve netminder Jeremy
Wenzel after he'd made several outstanding saves while the
Rangers were playing 5-on-3. Less three minutes later Robert
Burrows sent Jason Young
streaking up the ice and Young made no mistake to ice the contest and the
series.
It somehow seems only fitting that a pair of seniors, Rob
Mazzuca (who had an outstanding game and has played some of his best
hockey of his career the last few nights) and Lawne Snyder
combined for what would be the game winner and series winner. The two other
seniors had outstanding games as well, Tom
Kotsopoulos (while uncharacteristically absent on the scoresheet played
a tremendous game and filled the leadership void when captain Kevin
Tompkins went down) and Jeremy
Wenzel (who was well, like Jeremy and turned aside 40 of the 41
shots he faced).
Next up are the Division winners,
Vaughan Vipers who split the four-game regular season series with Markham
at 2 wins apiece. As soon as we have a schedule we'll be sure to publish
it in a timely manner.
