The Waxers hard work paid some dividends this time, although the score was still not indicative of the play as Markham outshot Shelburne 53-24 en route to a 5-4 overtime victory.

After the Waxers had several scoring chances thwarted by solid Wolves' goaltending Shelburne capitalized on a couple of lapses to take a 2-0 lead with scores 22 seconds apart in the middle of the opening frame. The Waxers recovered however and kept pressing and finally Chris Petracco struck paydirt as he converted for his 14th goal of the season from Jim Ulcar and Bryan Lachapelle. A continuation of the sustained attack brought more rewards when Rob Mazzuca rifled one home from Daniel Sisca and Jimmy Ball and things were back to even at 2-2 after 20 minutes.

There was virtually no letup in the attack by the Waxers in the second period and they were rewarded again as they managed to solve the hot Shelburne netminder twice more to take a 4-2 lead after two complete. Rob Bumbaco gave the Waxers their first lead midway into the period off a feed from Ian Malcolm. Then Malcolm converted for his 25th of the season from Bumbaco and Brett Barrer.

The third period saw the Waxers dominate the play once again as they outshot their opponents 18-6, however, the Wolves capitalized on their chances to force the game into overtime.

This time overtime was much more kind to the Waxers as the fleet-footed Bumbaco connected just 18 seconds into the extra session after taking a pass from Ulcar and putting high over top of the Wolves netminder. Bumbaco's marker was his second of the night and gave him a three-point night for his efforts as he continues to show why he was so highly sought after by the Waxers.

A tremendous sustained attack that should have netted the Waxers many more goals than they scored combined with a steady performance in net by newcomer Matt Cifelli who faced many tough shots despite the low shot total (there weren't too many "cheapies" in Shelburne's 24 shots) brought the result the Waxers have been desparately seeking after stumbling through a period where the effort was there but things weren't quite clicking. Give the players credit for staying with the game plan even when early on it looked like "yet another one of those games".

The Waxers finish off their December regular season schedule Saturday night as they play the rival Thornhill Rattlers at Thornhill Community Centre. EDITOR
