The Waxers broke out of
their winless skid with a convincing 4-2 win over the Wexford Raiders. For the second
straight game, the final score and creative shot totals, did not do the Waxers justice as
the game was not nearly as close as those figures would suggest. The Waxers again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals less than
1 minute apart mid-way through the first period. Brett
Barrer became the fourth ten-goal scorer on the team as he scored on a
rebound on the powerplay after Ian Malcolm
had setup Rob Mazzuca for a
shot from the slot. Then, 35 seconds later, Daniel
Sisca tucked a rebound in to a wide open net as Mazzuca let go another shot
from the slot after being setup this time by Lawne
Snyder. Wexford would cut the lead in half before the period ended.
Markham then surged ahead 4-1 after again scoring within 2
minutes between the 7 and 9 minute marks of the second. Ian Malcolm became the first
20-goal scorer this year as he and Ryan
Bayliss hooked up on a beautiful give-and-go play after Kevin Tyrrell had sprung them on
a 2-on-1 break. Then while killing a penalty, Bryan
Lachapelle sent Chris
Petracco in all alone on a clear cut breakaway and a quick deke to the
backhand put the Waxers up 4-1. Wexford then scored once before the end of the second to
complete the scoring.
Tom Lawson
made his first start in 4 games as he returned from his bout with mononucleosis and
stopped 34 shots for the victory, his 8th of the year.
The third period saw Markham play extremely strong in
their own end and did not give up a scoring opportunity while they generated numerous
chances of their own however the crossbar got in the way of any more Markham goals on two
occasions. RH
