The Waxers jumped all over
the Stouffville Spirit in the latter half of the opening period as they scored three
consecutive scores before Stouffville finally got on the board late in the period as
Markham started and finished well to earn a 6-3 victory over the Spirit. Jim Ulcar
scored his second of the year with the assist to Bryan Lachapelle as his low
point shot, skipped past the Stouffville netminder. Less than four minutes later Mike Clarke scored his second of
the year during a Markham powerplay as he blasted in an Ian Malcolm feed from the point
into the Spirit cage. Brett Barrer
drew the other assist on Clarke's goal. With less than three minutes to Matt Selby
scored a goal scorer's goal as he waited, and waited for the defender and the netminder to
take themselves out and flipped the puck into the net for his first of the season. Ulcar
drew the assist.
The second period saw the Waxers float around a bit and
consequently a Stouffville powerplay goal made it a game once again. A key play was when Tom Lawson sprawled and seemingly
out of the play after making a stop and a Stouffville attacker with the puck and an almost
wide open cage couldn't put the puck in as Lawson threw up his arm and preserved the 3-2
lead at the time.
The third period was all Waxers as Barrer scored the first
of two on the night from Malcolm and Kevin
Tompkins, Barrer received the pass and spun past a Stouffville defender and
while falling tucked a backhander past the startled netminder who'd have more bad news
later. Five minutes later it was the Malcolm and Barrer show once again as this time
Barrer planted himself at the edge of the crease and received a beautiful feed from
Malcolm as he drew the defenders to him along the side boards.
With Markham killing another powerplay (one of ten on the
night), Lawne Snyder wound up
the howitzer at the face off circle of his own end in front of netminder Lawson except
this time a skipping puck made it all the way through the Stouffville attackers the length
of the ice and right through the Spirit netminder and it was lights out. A later
Stouffville powerplay goal closed the scoring.
The Waxers next game is Saturday evening at they visit
North York Centennial to take on the Rangers. It's basically a must-win game for the
Waxers as they have played well but still lag behind the Conference-leading and
league-leading Hurricanes who finally suffered their first defeat of the season last night
to Couchiching by a 4-2 count.
