The Markham Waxers took their four game winning streak on the road to face the undefeated, league leading Newmarket Hurricanes and came away with a 3-1 loss.

The Waxers once again fell behind early as the Hurricanes put Markham in a deep hole as they took a 2-0 lead after just 7:30 of the opening period.

Following a scoreless second period the Waxers broke through as Lawne Snyder scored assisted by Ian Malcolm and Kevin Tyrrell midway through the final frame. However, the Waxers were unable to get the equalizer and the contest's outcome was decided finally when Newmarket scored an empty-net goal with 1:09 left in the game about 20 seconds after the Waxers pulled netminder Tom Lawson for the extra attacker.

The Waxers played effectively, particularly in the final period but unfortunately playing catch-up hockey against a tough opponent is not the best way to score points. Coach Russ Herrington may be a little disappointed in the amount of time the Waxers spent in the penalty box and may have cause to be a little concerned over the lack of judgment or discipline shown by his troops this night.

Mike Clarke while he wasn't a factor on the scoresheet played an outstanding game, using his body effectively to move people off of the puck and then jumping in to take control in starting offensive rushes as he was one of the bright lights on the evening. Lawson was absolutely outstanding once again as he held the Waxers in the game before they finally got their attack unravelled in the third period.

Markham now takes their 7-4-1 record back home Friday night as they host the Durham Huskies at Centennial Arena at 8:00pm.
