The Waxers lost an early season first-place battle against the Newmarket Hurricanes in a 3-2 loss at Markham. A game that was kept close by the solid and often spectacular goaltending of Tom Lawson, the Waxers produced perhaps their poorest effort of the young season.

Newmarket scored first a the 4 minute mark and the scored remained 1-0 after 20.

Brett Barrer then scored two goals for the Waxers, the first on the powerplay from Jimmy Ball and Ian Malcolm and the second with just over 2 minutes left in the 2nd, from Malcolm and Jim Stamatopoulos.

Newmarket tied the game at 2-2 from the faceoff following Barrer's second goal and the final twenty minutes saw a see-saw battle with Newmarket scoring the winning goal with 7 minutes left in the game.
